Bayanihan is derived from the Filipino word bayan which means nation or community. It literally means helping each other and working together as a community to achieve a common goal.
In the past, bayanihan meant neighbors helping each other carry an entire native nipa hut to a new location.

Kamayan (eating with hands) is a traditional Filipino way of dining. It has been practiced by Filipinos since the pre-colonial era. Filipinos started using the spoon, fork and knife during the Spanish Colonial period. The practice of kamayan still continues and has been passed on from one generation to another until now. Filipinos usually eat in this traditional way during feasts and home celebrations, etc. During kamayan, people share different kinds of food spread on a plate or on banana leaves.
