VOLONTARIATO

Se, nell'autunno del 2017, mi avessero chiesto se mi sarei mai immaginato in prigione, in compagnia di ladri e truffatori, avrei risposto di no senza troppe esitazioni. Naturalmente, non avevo idea che da lì a poche settimane sarei finito a passeggiare per i corridoi del Carcere di Bollate, alle porte di Milano, benchè non come carcerato. Un professore nell'università dove studiavo cercava ragazzi che partecipassero ad un progetto di assistenza agli studenti detenuti, e io mi offrii subito volontario.

"Ehi, aspetta un momento. Studenti detenuti??"

Ebbene sì! In Italia, i carcerati hanno la possibilità di iscriversi all'università.

I "miei" studenti, tuttavia, non avevano la possibilità di uscire, e avevano bisogno di qualcuno che gli procurasse libri, consigli e assistenza amministrativa.

I ragazzi a me assegnati erano entrambi stranieri, provenienti da paesi da cui, negli ultimi decenni, in Italia sono immigrate molte persone. Ricordo di aver trascorso molto tempo a chiacchierare con loro, osservando attentamente il loro modo di parlare e comportarsi. E' stata un'esperienza di grande crescita personale che mi ha insegnato molto sulla natura umana.

もし、2017年の秋に、「自分が刑務所で、泥棒や詐欺師と一緒にいる姿を想像していましたか」と聞かれたら、あまり迷わず「いいえ」と答えたと思います。もちろん、数週間後にミラノ郊外のボラーテ刑務所の廊下を、囚人としてではないものの、歩くことになるとは思ってもいませんでした。留学先の大学の教授が、刑務所の学生を支援するプロジェクトに参加する若者を募集していたので、私はすぐに志願しました。

「ちょっと待ってください。 刑務所の生徒ですか？」

はい、そうです。イタリアでは、囚人にも大学に入学する機会があるのです。

しかし、「刑務所」の生徒たちは外に出る機会がなく、本を買ってきてくれる人やアドバイスをする人、事務的なサポートをする人が必要でした。

私が担当となった少年たちは2人とも外国人で、ここ数十年でイタリアに移住してきた人が多い国の出身でした。彼らの話し方や振る舞いを注意深く観察しながら、多くの時間を一緒に過ごしたことを覚えています。それは、人間の本質を学び、大きく成長できた経験でした。

The Healing Power of Plants

We're in the midst of a worldwide pandemic and many of us are facing challenges. We suffer from stress, anxiety and depression. However, we always find ways to alleviate these concerns. For me, diverting my attention to plants makes me truly happy. It really helps me to feel calmer and more relaxed. My family have started to put plants in front of our house. It's pretty amazing how this simple thing benefits our physical and mental health. It's really worth the effort.

Shimanami Kaidou : Part 2

After spending a lot longer at the Murasaki Suigun Museum than I intended, I needed to find a campsite close enough to ride to within business hours. Quickly checking Google Maps for a campsite that had tents for rental, I found a nice, cheap spot near the sea on Hakata Island and so decided to make my way there; only to be told at the booking office that they didn't have any tents for rental! Undeterred, I showed them the website where it said that they had tents for rental:
 
 “That was ten years ago.”
 
Well, not having any choice, I decided to camp there anyway – just without a tent. Despite it getting a little cold at night, there was no need to make a Teru Teru Bozu as the sky remained clear. Luckily.
 
If you ride the Shimanami Kaidou, I definitely recommend planning your trip before starting!
 
One of the other stops I made during my ride was the Murakami Santo Memorial Hall in Tatara Shimanami Park on Omishima, a museum which contains a lot of works by the calligrapher Murakami Santo. It's pretty cheap to get in (about 500 yen, I think) and doesn't seem to get many visitors as I was the only person there during my visit. It was very interesting.

村上水軍博物館での滞在が予定より長くなってしまったので、営業時間内に自転車で行けるような近い距離にあるキャンプ場を探す必要がありました。Google Mapでテントの貸し出しをしているキャンプ場を調べると、伯方島の海の近くに安くて良い場所があったので、そこに行くことにしました。しかし、予約窓口に行くと、「テントの貸し出しは行っておりません！」と言われました。そこで私はレンタルテントがあると書いてあったホームページをスタッフに見せると、こう言われました。

 「それは10年前の話だ」と。

仕方がないので、テントなしでキャンプをすることにしました。夜は少し冷え込みましたが、晴天が続いたので、てるてる坊主を作る必要はありませんでした。よかったです。

しまなみ海道をサイクリングする際は、出発前に計画を立てることをお勧めします！

他にも、大三島の多々羅しまなみ公園にある村上山島記念館は、書道家・村上三島氏の作品を多く展示する美術館です。入場料がかなり安く（500円くらいだったと思います）、私が訪れた時は私１人だったので、あまり訪問者は多くないようです。とても面白かったです。

Shimanami Kaidou : Part 1

Great weather / Great scenery

This April after finishing my time working in Imabari city in Ehime prefecture I took a few days off to do some sightseeing before returning to Osaka. Since I was in Imabari, I decided to ride across the Shimanami Kaidou.

-- Best. Decision. Ever.  

Seriously, it is easily in my top three experiences since coming to Japan.

Amazing weather, jaw-dropping scenery, and interesting history combined to make the two days I spent on the islands two of the best days I have had in Japan. I probably should have spent some time planning my trip before I departed, though. - But more on that later.

Anyway, after renting my bike from Imabari Station I headed for Kurushima Bridge and Oshima Island. On Oshima, I stopped at a small temple/shrine which was next to the cycle route before heading to the Murakami Suigun Museum. Here you can learn all about the history and culture of Murakami Suigun and the Seto Inland Sea.

If you ride the Shimanami Kaidou, I definitely recommend checking it out.

素晴らしい天気 / 素晴らしい景色

今年の4月、愛媛県今治市での出張を終えた私は、大阪に戻る前に数日間の休暇を取り、観光をしました。せっかく今治に来たのだから、しまなみ海道を自転車で走ってみようと思い立ちました。

-- 今までで最高の決断でした。

日本に来てからの経験で、トップ3に入るくらいです。

素晴らしい天候、目を見張るような景色、興味深い歴史が相まって、島で過ごした2日間は、日本で過ごした最高の2日間となりました。 でも、出発前に時間をかけて旅の計画を立てるべきだったかもしれませんね。- それについては後で詳しく説明します。

とにかく、今治駅で自転車を借りた後、私は来島海峡大橋と大島に向かいました。大島では、サイクリングロードに隣接する小さな寺（または神社) に立ち寄ってから、村上水軍博物館へ向かいました。ここでは、村上水軍と瀬戸内海の歴史や文化について学ぶことができます。

しまなみ海道を訪れた際は、ぜひ行ってみてください。
