The Origins
Salve a tutti ragazzi! Oggi vorrei parlarvi di una delle feste
italiane più famose in tutto il Mondo: il Carnevale!
Hi everyone! Today I would like to talk to you
about one of the most famous Italian festivals in the world: the Carnival!
Questa festa è collegata ad un'altra celebrazione altrettanto
famosa: La Pasqua. Infatti, il Canevale non ha una data fissa, ma ogni anno si
festeggia in un giorno diverso, a seconda della Pasqua.
This holiday is connected with another equally
famous celebration: Easter. In fact, the Canevale does not have a fixed
date, but every year it is celebrated on a different day, depending on Easter.
Il nome “Carnevale” infatti, deriva dal Latino “Canem Levare” ovvero
“levare (non mangiare) la carne”. Infatti, subito dopo il Carnevale inizia la
Quaresima. Un periodo di digiuno lungo 40 giorni, che termina con la Pasqua.

from the Latin "Canem Levare" or "to remove (not eat) the
meat". In fact, Lent begins immediately after Carnival. A forty-day
fasting period, ending with Easter.

The Celebrations
Il Carnevale si festeggia per 5 giorni, in cui la gente scende in
piazza indossando maschere e costumi diversi, molto simile all'Halloween
americano. I bambini spesso indossano le maschere dei cartoni animati, come le
principesse Disney e gli eroi Marvel. Gli adulti invece, indossano le maschere
tradizionali della propria regione. In Italia infatti, ogni regione ha uno o
più personaggi tipici, un po' come le mascot in Giappone. I più famosi sono
senza dubbio Arlecchino da Bergamo e Pulcinella da Napoli. Ce ne sono
tantissime altre ancora, vi consiglio vivamente di cercarle su internet!
The Carnival is celebrated for five days, in
which people take to the streets wearing different masks and costumes, very
similar to the American Halloween. Children often wear cartoon masks, such as
Disney princesses and Marvel heroes. Adults, on the other hand, wear the
traditional masks of their region. In fact, in Italy, each region has one or
more typical characters, a bit like the mascots in Japan. The most famous are
undoubtedly Arlecchino from Bergamo and Pulcinella from Naples. There are many
more, I highly recommend you look for them on the Internet!
Come abbiamo detto, per il Carnevale si scende in piazza e… si fa
casino! Anche i festeggiamenti, proprio come le maschere, cambiano molto in
base alla regione, ma in general ci si lancia tante cose, come coriandoli,
stelle filanti, schiuma da barba e in alcuni posti, purtroppo, anche del cibo,
come uova, pomodori e arance.
As we said, for the Carnival people take to
the streets and… make a mess! Even the celebrations, just like the masks,
change a lot according to the region, but in general we throw a lot of things,
such as confetti, streamers, shaving foam and in some places, unfortunately,
even food, such as eggs, tomatoes and oranges.
Inoltre, non bisogna dimenticare gli incredibili carri allegorici!
Ovvero dei maginifici carri in cartapesta, grandi e coloratissimi, che sfilano
per le vie della città. I più famosi sono senza dubbio quelli di Viareggio e
Arcirale, ma quasi ogni città ha una sua parata di carri allegorici, spesso in
diversi giorni dell'anno. Nella mia città, ad esempio, c'è la tradizione dei
Carri di Maggio nel primo del mese.
Also, don't forget the incredible allegorical
floats! That's to say the magnificent papier-mâché floats, large and colorful,
that parade through the streets of the city. The most famous are undoubtedly
those of Viareggio and Arcirale, but almost every city has its own parade of
allegorical floats, often on different days of the year. In my city, for
example, there is the tradition of the May Chariots on the first day of the
month.

Cibo
The Food
Come abbiamo detto, il Carnevale e la festa del divertimento e del
caos, quindi anche piatti tipici di questo periodo sono altrettanto ricchi e
festosi. In particolare la cucina del carnevale è caratterizzata da dolci
fritti e zuccherati, come le chiacchere, conosciute anche come frappe, o
diversi tipi di ciambelle. Per quanto riguarda il salato invece abbiamo pasta
al forno, polpette fritte e vari tipi di arrosti misti.
As we have said, Carnival is a party of fun
and chaos, so even typical dishes of this period are just as rich and festive.
In particular, the carnival cuisine is characterized by fried and sugary
desserts, such as chiacchere, also known as frappe, or different
types of donuts. As for the savoury, we have baked pasta, fried meatballs and
various types of mixed roasts.

Il Carnevale è una festa meravigliosa, che mostra a pieno I colori e
la vivacità della lingua italaiana. Vi consiglio vivamente di visitare il Bel
Paese durante questo periodo e di lasciarvi trasportare dai festeggiamenti!
