Anna : 1 Year Anniversary

Now it’s been one year since I came to Japan! I can’t believe I’ve already been here this long. When I think about 2013 and graduating from college, it feels like a really long time ago but it was only 12 months. In that time, many things have happened to me, my family, and my friends. I’ve met many cool people, traveled to a lot of different places, and learned many new things. Some of my friends got married or moved to other countries. My younger brothers started college and high school, respectively. It’s really amazing how many things can happen in such a short time.

At the beginning, I was really scared about coming to Japan. This is the first time I’ve ever lived somewhere alone, without my family or friends. For the first three months I really felt like giving up and going back home. Even though I had been to Japan before, the second time was so different; I was shocked and confused. The first time I visited Japan I was happy every day and never thought about going home because I had good friends with me. This time, however, I had to do everything by myself and I didn’t know what to do. I felt lost.

After some time passed, my experience started to become better and better. I began traveling around Japan and visiting my friends who live in Tokyo and Nagoya. I also made new friends here in Osaka and started going sightseeing and shopping. Now I always have something to do every day, and I’ve grown to feel comfortable being alone sometimes and doing things on my own. I have come to love Osaka and all of my new experiences!

My decision to come to Japan was actually very sudden, and at first I didn’t know if it was a good idea. But now that I’ve been here for one year, I’m definitely glad that I came here. I’ve been able to have a lot of experiences and learn a lot of things that I couldn’t have learned in America, and I would be sad if I went back home now because I’m having so much fun in Japan. I think I was able to really grow as a person because I came to Japan, and I’m looking forward to my next year!

Florence: The kitchen garden


Si je vous dis : « Versailles »... Vous pensez tout de suite à Louis XIV et son château, les grands jardins rectilignes et la Galerie des Glaces...
Mais je voudrais maintenant vous parler d'une autre facette de Versailles, plus intime, plus discrète mais aussi plus chaleureuse et vivante : le Potager du Roi.
Eh oui... Le Roi et sa Cour devaient manger et, qui plus est, des fruits et des légumes de qualité! Louis XIV avait d'ailleurs une passion pour les figues et ses jardiniers devaient être sûrs de pouvoir lui en fournir le plus longtemps possible pendant l'année... Tâche difficile pour un fruit qui pousse normalement dans le sud de la France...

If I say to you “Versailles,” one might immediately think about Louis XIV and his palace, its famously straight gardens and the Hall of Mirrors. Yet I would like now to write about a more intimate, lesser known but lively facet of Versailles: the Kitchen Garden of the King. (That’s Le Potager du Roi in French.)
Of course the king and his court had to eat. And what's more, they wanted fresh fruits and vegetables. King Louis XIV in particular had a passion for figs, so gardeners had to be sure they could furnish this fruit as much as possible throughout the year... A difficult task for something that usually grows far to the south of France.

Le Potager du Roi a donc été créé pour approvisionner le château et ses occupants. Il est situé non loin de l'Orangerie, de l'autre côté de la route, à côté de la Pièce d'eau des Suisses. Il a été créé par Jean-Baptiste de la Quintinie en 1683. Les travaux ont débuté en 1678 et ont duré 5 ans car le terrain n'était pas adapté pour l'établissement d'un potager. Il a fallu assécher le marais et amener de la terre de bonne qualité. Le potager est organisé de manière très géométrique, un système de carrés marqués par des murs qui supportent les arbres fruitiers palissés. Ces carrés de tailles différentes sont ordonnés autour d'un bassin central utilisé pour l'arrosage. Une terrasse surplombe l'ensemble, cette terrasse était un lieu de promenade privilégié par Louis XIV qui aimait regarder le travail des jardiniers. Les murs permettent de garder la chaleur du soleil dans le jardin, ainsi que d'abriter les plantes du vent. Il fait donc toujours un peu plus chaud dans le jardin que dans le reste de la ville. Ce micro-climat a permis aux jardiniers d'expérimenter beaucoup de modes de culture et de faire pousser des légumes inadaptés à l’hiver parisien.
 
The kitchen garden was created to supply the château and its occupants. It is situated across the road from the Orangery, next to the Swiss Ornamental Lake (La Pièce d'eau des Suisses). Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie began construction in 1678 but it wasn’t completed until 1683. The project took over five years because the land was poorly suited for the establishment of a garden; they had to drain the swamp and improve the quality of the soil.
The Potager is very geometrical: a combination of squares whose walls support trellised fruit trees. This scheme of squares is organized around a central pool used for irrigation. A terrace overlooks the gardens; it was the privileged walkway of Louis XIV, who enjoyed watching the gardeners work. The walls of the different gardens retain the heat of the sun and protect the plants from the wind, so the kitchen garden is always a bit warmer than the rest of the city. By creating this micro-climate, the gardeners could experiment with many methods for cultivating fruits and vegetables unadapted to the cold Parisian winter.

De nos jours, on peut acheter de nombreux fruits et légumes anciens dans la boutique du Potager. On y trouve notamment une grande variété de pommes et de poires (+ de 400 espèces aux formes, couleurs et goûts différents). C'est également l'occasion de découvrir des variétés très étranges de potirons, qui sont la spécialité du Potager. La promenade peut se terminer dans le Parc du Balbi, jardin anglais récemment rénové par des étudiants passionnés.

Nowadays, there is a wide variety of ancient fruits and vegetables for sale in the Potager shop. There is an especially huge collection of apples and pears: more than 400 species with different shapes, colors and tastes! You can also discover strange species of pumpkin in autumn, the specialty of the Potager. You can wrap up your visit by taking a walk in Balbi Park, an English-style garden renovated by passionate students.

J'ai eu la chance de faire mes études dans ce cadre idyllique car ces jardins font aujourd'hui partie de l' École de Paysage de Versailles. 4 années à contempler ces arbres fruitiers et ces alignements de légumes ne rendent pas ce jardin banal. Au contraire, chaque jour de chaque saison est différent et apporte une lumière nouvelle, la découverte d'une fleur qu'on ne connaît pas ou la surprise d'un nouvel oiseau dans les nids artificiels du jardin. Ne vous étonnez pas d'y croiser des jeunes aux tenues extravagantes ou de trouver tout à coup la respectueuse statue de La Quintinie enrobée de papier multicolore. Les étudiants possèdent certaines parcelles du jardin et ont également des cours d'art plastique. Ainsi, le Potager est devenu un terrain d'expérimentation dans le domaine de l'art. C'est ce que j'aime dans ce jardin : il a évolué, s'est adapté à de nouveaux usages, ce n'est pas qu'un joli tableau à regarder, l'arpenter lui donne du sens et tout le monde est le bienvenu pour partager un moment, une discussion, un café avec les jardiniers ou les élèves.

 I had the chance to study in this idyllic setting because the gardens are now owned by the National School of Landscape of Versailles (École nationale supérieure du paysage). Four years of contemplating the fruit trees and the endless rows of vegetables didn't make this place banal. On the contrary, each day of each season is different and always offers a new surprise: a beautiful light, an unfamiliar flower or perhaps a bird that recently settled into one of the artificial nests.
 Don't be shocked to meet young people wearing extravagant clothes or to discover the respectable statue of La Quintinie wrapped in colorful paper. Students own some land in the garden and they also study art, so it was natural that the Kitchen Garden of the King became a place to experiment with both art and gardening. That's why I really like this garden: it evolved and was adapted to new uses. It's not only a picturesque scene to contemplate; to pace up and down its paths gives one a true sense of the place. At the Kitchen Garden of the King, everyone is welcome to share a moment, a discussion, or a cup of coffee with the gardeners and students.

Christian :Behind the drums

Ultimamente estoy de baterista en una banda de rock y una de metal. El metal me encanta y es lo que me llena. Hasta ahora he sido cantante;sin embargo quiero meterme mas en el mundo detras de los tarros.

Currently I’m a drummer in two different bands. One is a rock band and the other is a metal band.
Metal music is my passion and fills me with life! Until recently I had only been a singer, but I was really wanting to get into the world behind the drums.

Detras de la bateria es todo distinto como aislado y no eres ya el centro de la atencion como cuando eres cantante. Es como mas anonimo,por eso tienes que darle tu toque a cada cancion y por lo mismo estoy perfeccionando mi tecnica viendo videos en youtube o leyendo revistas al respecto.
Quisiera tomar lecciones de bateria pero es un poco caro... 
bueno hasta la proxima.

Behind the drums everything is quite different. You are isolated and no longer the center of attention like singers are. It feels a bit anonymous, so you really have to put your signature on every song you play. That is why I am perfecting my technique by watching videos on the web or reading magazines about drumming. I would really like to take some drum lessons, but it is quite expensive.

Anna: I touched a kangaroo!

Il 22 Agosto una mia amica e' venuta a casa mia per pranzo.
Nel pomeriggio, decidemmo di andare in un negozio di animali nel centro commerciale vicino casa mia. In questo negozio e' possibile toccare gli animali e, dal momento che mi piacciono molto, stavo aspettando l'occasione per andarci!

On August 22nd, a friend came over to my house for lunch.
In the afternoon, we decided to go to a pet shop located in a department store near my house. I am always looking for an excuse to visit because you are allowed to touch the animals! I really like petting the cute critters.


Non so bene come descrivere questo posto. E' una specie di zoo e cafe' insieme, diviso in tre stanze. Nella prima c'erano i conigli, i criceti e le tartarughe (fin qui, niente di particolare!); nella seconda c'erano cani, gatti e maialini (e qui iniziavo un po' ad essere sconcertata!); nell'ultima stanza c'erano piccoli di canguro, due gufi, un'iguana, una specie di lama bianco e degli animali di cui non conosco il nome!!

Actually, I don't know how to describe this place. It's a kind of mix, part zoo and part café, divided into three areas. In the first room there were rabbits, hamsters and turtles; nothing special. In the second one there were dogs, cats (still normal pets, right?) …and pigs! The first time I visited, I was really taken aback by this point, but there were more surprises to come. In the last section there were baby kangaroos, two owls, an iguana, a kind of white llama and even more animals that I don't know the names of!

Quando ho visto i canguri, mi sono davvero sorpresa!! Devo dire pero' che vedere i bambini accarezzare e dare da mangiare agli animali e' stato uno spettacolo molto dolce!! I bambini non hanno paura di essere morsi o attaccati, quindi si avvicinano senza paura a tutti gli animali, anche quelli piu' grandi di loro!! C'era, infatti, una bambina che giocava con la coda dell'iguana, senza la minima esitazione!! Io,invece, l'iguana non l'ho toccato!!! Al contrario, ho preferito toccare i canguri!! Erano cosi' soffici che sembrava di toccare la lana!!!! E' stata un'esperienza davvero interessante!!! Quando ho detto alla mia amica 'Non posso crederci! Ho toccato un canguro!!', lei mi ha proposto di fare una foto, ma ero troppo imbarazzata, cosi' ho rifiutato!!!

When I saw the kangaroos I was quite surprised, but I have to say that seeing the children who were petting and feeding the animals was really sweet. Kids aren't afraid of being bitten or attacked, so they fearlessly approached all of the animals, even when the creatures were bigger than them! There was a little girl who was playing with the iguana’s tail without the slightest hesitation. She was braver than me; there is no way I could touch it! I think it’s much better to pet the kangaroos. They were so soft that they seemed woolen. It was a really interesting experience to pet them. When I said to my friend, “I can't believe it, I am touching a kangaroo!” she offered to take my picture, but I was too embarrassed so I refused.
 
Dopo essere uscite dal negozio, abbiamo mangiato un gelato e poi abbiamo visto anche la danza dell'obon, nella piazza vicino al centro commerciale!!
Insomma, una giornata piena!!!

After the pet shop, we ate some ice cream. We then had the opportunity to watch some people performing the Obon dance in a square near the department store. (Cool!)
In short, we had a full day.
