Riccardo: You know you’ve been in Italy too long when… (Part One)

Uno straniero che ha vissuto e lavorato in Italia per molto tempo diventera' a poco a poco un po’ italiano. Vediamo insieme come e perché!

Le abitudini uniche degli italiani verranno infatti facilmente assimilate che lo si voglia o no.

Ovviamente ciò che elencherò qui sotto sono stereotipi, alcuni di questi potranno anche essere in parte veri ma non si possono applicare alla maggioranza degli italiani. Quindi leggere con cautela!

A foreigner who lives and works in

for a long time will little by little become a bit Italian. Together, let’s see how and why!

The peculiar habits of Italian people are easily assimilated whether or not you intend to emulate the locals.

Of course, what I am going to list down here are stereotypes. Some of them may be partially true but they do not refer to the majority of Italian people. Therefore, please do not take this too seriously.

l Il caffè espresso

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando bevi caffè rigorosamente espresso in ogni occasione della giornata: al mattino a colazione, al bar prima del lavoro, in pausa con i colleghi, dopo pranzo (e poi sigaretta!), Ecco spiegato il perché gli italiani sono sempre sovraeccitati!

l Drinking espresso

for too long when you drink espresso whenever you can: in the morning for breakfast, at the café before work, during break time with your colleagues, after lunch (and then smoke a cigarette straight away). This explains why Italian people are so energetic all the time.

l Arrivare In ritardo al lavoro

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando non ti preoccupi di arrivare in ritardo al lavoro. Pazienza! Si può sempre rimanere qualche minuto in più in ufficio alla fine… cosa vuoi che sia!

l Being late to work

You know you've been living in

for too long when you stop caring about arriving at work on time. Oh well. You can always stay late at the end of the day, whatever.

l Indossare gli occhiali da sole in tutte le stagioni

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando indossi occhiali da sole in ogni stagione sia fuori casa che in casa, al bar, in discoteca ma … non in ufficio (forse!).

l Wearing sunglasses all year round

You know you've been living in

for too long when you wear sunglasses all year round. When you’re at home, at the bar, at the disco, almost anywhere… but maybe not in the office!

l Confrontarsi con le persone e dire la propria.

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando impari a esprimere te stesso al 100% e liberarti dalle emozioni davanti alle persone.

Per esempio, anche se sei uomo, piangere e commuoverti per le notizie belle o mentre stai guardando una scena romantica di un qualche film (ma forse questo succede solo a me!).

l Confronting people and giving your opinion

You know you've been living in

for too long when you learn how to express yourself 100% and freely show your emotions in front of people. Case in point: if we don’t like someone’s choice of clothing, we’re not afraid to tell them that directly.

And even though I’m a man, I can be so moved by good news or while watching a romantic scene in some movie that I get tears in my eyes… (Although this may just happen to me.)

l A colazione solo cappuccino e brioche

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando la tua colazione non comprende più pesce e miso ma solo più latte e biscotti a casa o magari cappuccino e brioche al bar.

l Cappuccino and croissant for breakfast

for too long when your breakfast no longer includes fish and miso but only milk and cookies at your house or maybe a cappuccino and a croissant at the espresso bar.

l Imparare a cucinare la vera pasta

Sai di essere da troppo tempo in Italia quando impari ad abbinare il giusto sugo con il giusto tipo di forma di pasta. In Italia ci sono infatti tanti tipi di pasta (…. troppi!) e ogni forma ha il suo nome e bisogna conoscerli tutti così come devi imparare a cucinare la pasta ”al dente”.

l Learning all about pasta

for too long when you can match the right sauce to the right shape of pasta. In Italy there are so many types of pasta (too many!) and each shape comes with its own name; you get to know them all, just like you learn how to cook the pasta “al dente”.

Nicolas : Why Cologne?

Köln ist die drittgrösste Stadt Deutschlands und keine besonders schöne Stadt. Es gibt keine historische Gebaeude, da die Stadt im Jahr 1945 zu 90% zerstört worden ist. Nur das Wahrzeichen der Stadt, der Kölner Dom, konnte zum “Glück” den Bomben entfliehen. Er allein ist es wert einen Umweg zu fahren. Bald wird die neue Moschee fertig sein. Wenn sie fertig ist, ist sie die grösste Moschee Deutschlands. Somit wird auch ein sehenswerter Bau sein.

Cologne is the third largest city in

, but it is not a particularly beautiful place. Most of the old buildings, about 90%, were destroyed in 1945. Only the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) managed to survive the air raids of World War II. Nowadays, it is the signature landmark of the city. In fact, its beauty is a good reason for visiting Cologne. Also, the new Cologne Central Mosque will soon be finished. It is going to be the biggest mosque in

Germany

, so it will be another interesting sight.

Köln hat im Vergleich zu Berlin oder Bonn kaum Museen. Es gibt weder nennenswerte Theater noch eine lebendige Kunstszene. Daher scheint die Stadt kein kulturelles Angebot zu haben. Aber Alternativen gibt es viele. Es gibt viele kleine interessante Austellungen, Theaterstücke und Musikevents in den vielen alten umgebauten Industriegebauden.

In comparison to Bonn or Berlin, Cologne does not have many museums, nor does it have famous theatres or a flourishing art scene. Therefore, the city might not seem to be very fun. However, there are many alternative sources of entertainment: interesting events, plays and musical performances taking place in former industrial complexes.

Köln ist eine sehr offene Stadt. Multikulturell und international: aus aller Welt kommen Menschen um in Köln zu studieren oder zu arbeiten, da es viele grosse Universitäten und wichtige Fernsehsender gibt. Köln hat Flair, eine eigene Identität, einen eigenen Dialekt, ein eigenes Bier, ist fahrradfreundlich und hat viel Natur, da die Stadt von einem “grünen Waldgürtel” umgeben ist.

Cologne is a very open minded city. Multicultural and international, many people from around the world come to Cologne in order to study at the famous universities or work for the biggest TV companies in

Germany

. Cologne has flair; a unique identity, its own dialect, and even a local brand of beer. It's also known as a great city for cycling; there are a lot of parks and greenery is abundant since it is surrounded by a big forest.

Wenn Sie was aussergewöhnliches sehen möchten, dann empfehle ich Ihnen den Karneval in Köln. Einmal im Jahr verkleidet sich die ganze Stadt und feiert ausgiebig von morgens bis abends, 7 Tage lang.

Also, viva Colonia!!

And if you'd like to see something really unique and crazy, you should see the Carnival of Cologne. Once a year, for one entire week, everybody is dressing up and celebrating all day long, partying like there is no tomorrow. “Viva Colonia!”
