What is "BER” Months?
By Teacher Cris

The “BER months” signify a time of transition into holiday cheer, cooler weather, and the anticipation of year-end events. It’s a period that blends seasonal changes with cultural traditions around gratitude, giving, and celebrating the close of a year. To us, Filipinos, it signifies three important things.

First, it’s time for the festivities. For Filipinos, the BER months represent more than just the change in weather—they’re the start of the holiday spirit and a time for celebration, togetherness, and reflection. It’s when families start preparing for Christmas, engage in charitable activities, and look forward to reconnecting with loved ones. The excitement and anticipation only grow as the months progress toward the final celebrations of the year.

Second, being with family. Considering that they spend most of the year away from home, especially overseas, Filipino workers (OFWs) frequently return home for Christmas, a holiday that represents Filipino values of family, faith, and togetherness. For them, it is an emotional and important time of year.

Lastly, the Noche Buena. One of the most significant and treasured customs of the holiday season in the Philippines is Noche Buena, the Christmas Eve feast. Noche Buena is still primarily about family and food, but the celebration has changed in the current era.

To sum up, more than just a holiday, the Philippines' four-month-long Christmas celebration reflects the nation's rich cultural legacy, unshakable faith, and enduring sense of community.
