I want
to start with a simple question: When you hear the word “New Year,” what comes
to your mind? Some may think about plenty of food, others of parties, and some
goals and reflection, such as New Year’s resolutions. For many, it is a mix of
these experiences.
On December 31, many families are busy buying
groceries, decorating, and preparing fireworks. In cities, those who can afford
it set off fireworks at night, while in some rural areas, people ready their
motorcycles to make noise at midnight. The goal is simply to welcome the year
with excitement and sound.
Mothers often prepare twelve kinds of fruits because these are believed to bring blessings and good fortune. Common choices include oranges, grapes, pomelos, and watermelons. Food for Media Noche is also an important part of the preparation. Media Noche is what we call the dinner we prepare on New Year’s Eve.
