A gift that made me happy when I was a child

By Teacher Ayna

A gift is something that is given wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. It symbolizes some of the special occasions, like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and some holidays. And it holds some precious memories in my life.

When I was a child, I received one of the best gifts that a child could ever ask for. As a little girl, I used to dream of having a cute stuffed animal that I could hug in my sleep, but one day, my father brought home a pair of fun-sized birds in a cage. They were so full of life and cheery. They had vibrant colors that fed my eyes with their beauty. They were so charming that I spent my time gazing at them all day. It was indeed one of the happiest moments in my childhood.

As I grew older, I realized a gift is not only material things; it is always more than that. It's not the size of the gift or how extravagant it looks. The ones that come from the most sincere hearts are still the best gifts of all.

Simbang Gabi  which means “Evening or Night Mass”

By Teacher Joey

It’s a Filipino Christmas tradition. As a devotional practice in the tradition of the novena, it is a series of nine evening Masses usually celebrated during Advent from December 16th - 24th, in preparation for Christmas Day.
The majority of parishes celebrate their first Simbang Gabi Mass between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. Rural areas sometimes go later, around 5:30 AM.  For those unable to rise in those early morning hours, you’re in luck!
Why are there nine Simbang Gabi Masses?
You see, according to scripture, the Virgin Mother miraculously became pregnant by the Holy Spirit in March before giving birth nine months later in December. Thus the nine Simbang Gabi gatherings represent each month of Mary carrying baby Jesus in anticipation of his holy birth.
Some people say that you have to complete the nine masses. However, in my opinion, you do not have to attend all nine Simbang Gabi masses in a row to gain blessings or satisfy the tradition. The most important thing is setting the intention to take part in Simbang Gabi.
Join The Simbang Gabi Mass Today!
Look, I get it! 4:00 AM alarms before hustling through thick holiday traffic sounds like chaos you’d rather just watch on Facebook, right? But folks, trust me: no amount of glitzy gift displays in the mall can ever replace those lifelong magical shared moments carved out while bleary-eyed under the glowing dawn of Simbang Gabi!

A New Year  Celebration

By Teacher  Dea

FILIPINOS celebrate New Year's with lively family get-togethers, featuring a big feast known as Noche Buena. The table is piled high with favorite dishes like lechon (roast pig), pancit (noodles for a long life), and sweet rice cakes, all meant to bring good health and wealth in the new year. It’s a special time when families come together to enjoy a delicious meal.

As midnight draws near, the streets fill up with fireworks, firecrackers, and lots of noise. People think all this racket scares away bad luck and evil spirits, giving everyone a clean slate for the new year.

Many folks also dress in polka-dotted clothes, which they believe bring money, and place twelve round fruits on the table—one for each month of the year—to wish for a prosperous year ahead. In some areas, kids jump at midnight because they think it will help them grow taller. The night is full of cheers, toasts, and a hopeful spirit as families look forward to a fresh start

My Favorite Place in Japan

By Teacher Bob

Students sometimes ask me what my favorite place in Japan is. That’s a  difficult question to answer because there are so many great places. But if I had so say just one place, it would be Arashiyama in Kyoto. If you’re there on a sunny day, it’s a glorious spot. The Togetsukyo Bridge is impressive and it’s great to stroll by the river and watch the boats go by. Whenever I go, I visit Tenryu-ji with its wonderful garden. It’s beautiful in spring when the cherry blossom is in full bloom and in autumn when the trees’ leaves are changing color.

Of course, Arashiyama is popular with tourists and it can get very crowded. I haven’t been there for a few years so I’m not sure how crowded it gets these days, but I found that if you are prepared to walk a bit, it’s possible to escape the crowds. Besides Tenryu-ji, there are numerous other temples and gardens to explore.

All Saint's Day: The Day to Remember

By Teacher JM

The scorching heat. The crowded stations. The unending, long queue for bus tickets. These are only a few of the many struggles I endure every November in order to reach my cherished birthplace of Cebu, which lies to the south. This is not unique to me; over thousands of Cebuanos are going through the same thing. Here goes the big question: Why willingly go through with the hustle and bustle?

All of this is done to commemorate All Saints Day, a Christian holiday devoted to remembering the saints and showing reverence for the deceased. This tradition shares some similarities with the Obon festival in its focus on honoring the deceased.

During this day, we visit cemeteries to offer flowers and candles. My family often offers food on the altar and says prayers for our ancestors. Our forefathers are said to visit us in the guise of insects when we are young. My younger sister once took care of a large moth, believing it to be our great-grandmother.

In my opinion, this custom goes far beyond simply marking a day of remembrance; it's about maintaining a close bond with our loved ones - dead or alive.

The Philippines is known to have beautiful places such as beaches and mountains. It has so much beauty that it attracts many tourists, and some of them have decided to live here. Our beaches are perfect destinations for relaxing.

One famous place in the Philippines is Boracay. It is considered one of the top islands in the Philippines because of its beauty. With its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, sunsets, delicious food, and much more, including the friendliness of the people living there, it makes you, as a tourist, want to stay longer or even stay and live there.

한국인이 좋아하는 관광지

By Teacher Morgan

Famous Souvenirs of the Philippines

By: Teacher Ina

Filipinos love to travel. Bringing pasalubong (souvenirs) home from a trip is a common custom in the Philippines and the same goes for other countries. If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, you may think about buying some souvenirs. It could be anything: handmade crafts, bags, or local food.

Hand-woven bags are a good option. These native bags for women are the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. They represent the Filipino local culture and are made with love.

Dried mangoes are one of the most famous local foods in Cebu. So it’s no surprise that foreign nationals choose to buy them as souvenirs for their loved ones back in their countries. Cebu is a land of sweet delicacies and handmade crafts, perfect for souvenirs.

My Mom’s Recipe

By Teacher Reyn

In the Philippines, cooking delicious food is a true source of magic. Among all Filipino dishes, Lumpiang Shanghai shines as the star of our kitchen because of my mom, whether we're celebrating a special occasion or eating a simple family meal.

My mom's version is the best one for me. Imagine the crispiness of the golden-brown crust on the outside and the savory filling on the inside, packed with ground pork and vegetables like onions, garlic, and carrots. She uses her special touch to make this dish truly magical through wrapping each roll carefully to ensure it is properly packed and to achieve perfect crispiness.

This dish has become our symbol of togetherness in our home because of the dedication and skill of my mom. Her version of Lumpiang Shanghai represents more than just a recipe to us; it is the heart of our kitchen, for it can turn ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.

Most-liked Anime

By: Teacher MC

The plot of the anime “Detective Conan” is about a teenage detective named Shinichi Kudo, who is poisoned by an evil group called "The Black Organization".    I think everyone knows this story because it was very popular and it was aired in the Philippines as a TV program from September 10th  2001 until 2016.

Filipino views on this anime were all positive as it shows how a criminal investigator should think and it goes with the saying that “The truth always prevails.” A mystery will always be solved; truth will eventually and inevitably be discovered.

Bird Watching

By Teacher Bob

One of my hobbies is bird watching. Whenever I go for a walk, I keep an eye out for the birds. I live in Osaka and spring and autumn are great times for spotting unusual birds because they fly through on migration and drop into the parks for a rest and something to eat. If you visit one of the parks in spring or autumn, the chances are you will see bird watchers with binoculars and cameras (with enormous zoom lenses) trying to spot these birds. If you see a group of them together all looking at something, then it’s probably something unusual! My two favorites are the Blue and White Flycatcher (O-ruri in Japanese) and the Narcissus Flycatcher (Kibitaki). One bird I haven’t seen yet but really want to see is the Siberian Rubythroat (Nogoma). Apparently, it’s easier to spot in autumn so I will try again this year!

Why has basketball remained popular throughout the entire Philippines?

By Teacher Jean

Good question, isn't it? Why? Well, I can slightly blame our two seasons, which are sunny and rainy. Unlike other foreign countries, which have four seasons, they usually enjoy summer sports and winter sports. However, the all-year summer atmosphere pushes most Filipinos to follow the local basketball sports team and the latest professional basketball team players. Undoubtedly, our minds are fixated on it no matter what other sports come along.

Recently, the Gilas Pilipinas basketball team won against the Latvian team. The final score was 89 vs 80; the Latvian team lost by nine points. Gilas Pilipinas was able to reach higher this time. We monitor every victory and loss of the Philippine team. Their wins and losses are considered ours to take. We're proud of every step of the game.

In a nutshell, the long history of the Philippine Basketball Association, which is also known as the PBA, assuredly speaks for itself.
