Unfortunate Trip to Scotland

Hello everyone! I'm Philip, from the UK! Today I'll write about my unfortunate trip to Scotland.

When I was younger, my family would go on holiday once a year. We would usually visit somewhere warm and next to the beach. One year we decided to try and climb the tallest mountain in the UK, called Ben Nevis in Scotland.

I was really excited! I used to love long walks with the scout group I was a part of, and I thought that climbing the tallest mountain in my home country would feel like a real achievement! I made sure to pack my best hiking gear and thickest socks so I'd be ready to face the mountain. The plan was to stay in Scotland for a week to visit other places too.

The day came to take the six-hour drive to Fort William in Scotland. We did our final checks and set off on our journey. I managed to fall asleep for a good amount of the journey. We stopped to eat and to get out of the car to stretch our legs. This is when everything started to go wrong. My stomach began to rumble, and I felt incredibly nauseous. I was suffering from travel sickness.

By the time we arrived at the caravan site, I was utterly exhausted. My father had to carry me to the caravan and tuck me into bed to sleep while the rest of the family carried the luggage into our holiday home. I stayed in that bed for two days while my parents cared for me. My father went and bought me medicine from a local town, and my mother made sure to keep a close eye on me. I ate nothing but buttered toast and raspberry jam until my stomach had calmed down.

After I had recovered, we attempted to climb the mountain, but that will be a story for another time. Since that holiday, I've always been careful to pack travel medicine on long journeys so that I never experience anything like that again.

みなさん、こんにちは。イギリスから来たフィリップです! 今日は私が体験した、スコットランドへの旅で残念だったことについて書きます。

若い頃、私の家族は年に１度、長期旅行をしていました。いつもは暖かくてビーチの近くにあるところに行くのですが、ある年、私たちはスコットランドのベン・ネヴィスというイギリスで１番高い山に登ってみることにしました。

私は本当にワクワクしました。所属していたボーイスカウトで長い距離を歩くのが好きだったので、母国で一番高い山に登ったら、本当に達成感があるだろうと思いました。最高の登山用具と厚手の靴下を用意し、山へ向かう準備をしました。計画では、スコットランドに1週間滞在し、他の場所も訪れることになっていました。

そして、6時間かけてスコットランドのフォート・ウィリアムへ向かう日がやってきました。最終チェックをした後、旅に出ました。道中は結構な時間、眠ってしまいました。食事をしたり、車から降りて足を伸ばしたりするために停車もしました。このときから、すべてがうまくいかなくなっていました。お腹がゴロゴロと鳴り始め、信じられないほどの吐き気をもよおしました。それは、乗り物酔いでした。

キャラバンサイトに到着したときには、私はすっかり疲れ果てていました。父が私をキャラバンまで運び、ベッドに寝かせている間に、他の家族が荷物を別荘に運んでくれたのです。私は2日間、そのベッドで両親に看病してもらいました。父は町から薬を買ってきてくれ、母は目を離さないようにしてくれました。お腹が落ち着くまでは、バタートーストとラズベリージャムしか食べませんでした。

回復後、山に登ろうとしたのですが、それはまた別の機会にお話ししましょう。それ以来、2度とあのようなことがないよう、長旅には酔い止め薬を持参するよう心がけています。

MODIGLIANI

Martedì sono andato in un museo di Osaka a vedere una mostra di Modigliani, pittore italiano del primo Novecento. Confesso di aver trascorso un paio d'ore davvero piacevoli!

I soggetti prediletti dall'artista livornese erano ritratti di amici o conoscenti e nudi femminili. Le persone raffigurate nei suoi quadri non hanno grande realismo: il collo, per esempio, così come il volto, è spesso eccessivamente allungato; i tratti somatici e i colori sono lontani dal livello di verosimiglianza che notiamo in un Caravaggio. Nondimeno, come potete vedere dalle immagini (Figure 1), è difficile ignorare il forte senso di umanità che traspare da molte delle tele di Modigliani.

Un altro tipico, impressionante stilema dell'artista sono gli occhi completamente dipinti di un azzurro quasi mistico (Figura 2): provate a concentrare l'attenzione in un simile sguardo... non vi sembra che sia ora la vostra stessa anima ad essere osservata?

火曜日に大阪の美術館で20世紀初頭のイタリアの画家Modiglianiの展覧会を見ました。それは本当に楽しい2時間でした。

リヴォルノ出身の画家が好んで描いたのは、友人や知人の肖像画や女性の裸体画でした。彼の描く人物は、顔だけでなく首もとても長く、体つきも色彩もカラヴァッジョのような迫真性からはほど遠いものでした。しかし、画像（図1）からわかるように、モディリアーニの作品からは、強い人間性が感じられるのです。

この画家のもうひとつの典型的で印象的なスタイルは、神秘的な青で塗りつぶされた目です（図2）。この目に注目して見てください。今、観察されているのはあなた自身の魂に思えてきませんか？

Let's paint!

For me, one way to relieve stress is painting. I’m not good at it but I love it. The medium I use is acrylic but hopefully one day I can try oil too. My skills are limited to just simple and basic strokes so I would love to attend painting classes in the near future.

I generally paint scenes of nature like horizons, skylines and beaches. Through painting I can express myself and relax. Playing with colors helps to calm my inner me. I paint when I’m feeling happy, sad, stressed or free.

How about you? Do you love to paint?

私の場合、ストレス解消法の1つは絵を描くことです。上手くはありませんが、大好きなんです。使う画材はアクリルですが、いつか油絵にも挑戦してみたいと思っています。私の技術はシンプルで基本的な描き方に限られているので、近い将来、絵画教室に通いたいと思っています。

私は普段、水平線、地平線、ビーチなどの自然のシーンを描きます。絵を描くことで、自分を表現し、リラックスすることができます。色で遊ぶことで、自分の内面を落ち着かせることができます。楽しいとき、悲しいとき、ストレスがあるとき、自由なときに絵を描きます。

한국의 여름 이벤트

코로나가 조금씩 잠잠해지고 관광업이 다시 되살아날 기미를 보이고 있는 요즘 많은 학생들이 한국여행에 눈을 돌리고 있을 것 이라고 생각합니다.

무더운 날씨가 지속되고 있는 요즘 한국에는 어떤 이벤트가 있을까요?

1. 서울 신촌 물총축제

매년 7월 서울특별시 신촌에서 개최되는 물총축제로 대한민국을 즐겁게 만들자는 목표하에 신촌 연세로에서 개최되는 축제 입니다. 이 축제의 특징은 나이와 성별, 인종과 국가를 뛰어넘어 모두 함께 물총을 쏘며 스트레스를 해소 할수 있다는 것이 특징입니다. 또한 시원한 물대포를 맞을 수 있는 워터 어트렉션과 DJ 공연등 여러가지 프로그램도 함께 즐길 수 있습니다.



2. 인천 펜타포트 락 페스티벌

매년 7~8월에 인천광역시에서 열리는 록 페스티벌로 인천광역시가 추최하는 축제입니다. 국내 대표 아웃도어 음악축제로 한국 뿐만 아니라 해외의 유명 뮤지션과 함께하는 글로벌 음악축제입니다. 이 뿐만 아니라 시원한 음식과 다양한 음식도 제공되어 오감을 만족시켜줄 수 있는 축제 입니다. 

3. 밤 도깨비 야시장

서울 특별시에서 주최하는 야시장으로 서울의 한강공원 및 청계천 등에서

열리는 축제 입니다. 서울의 아름다운 야경을 보며 길거리 음식을 먹을 수 있어  떡볶이나 비빔밥, 부침개와 같은 한국의 음식뿐만 아니라 스테이크나 다꼬야끼와 같은 여러가지 음식을 맛 볼수 있습니다.

暑い日が続くこの時期、韓国ではどのようなイベントがあるのか紹介します。

1. ソウル新村水鉄砲祭り
毎年7月にソウルの新村で開催される、韓国を幸せにするための水鉄砲祭りです。このお祭りの特徴は、年齢、性別、人種、国籍に関係なく、誰でも水鉄砲を撃ってストレス解消ができることです。また、水鉄砲を撃つウォーターアトラクションやDJパフォーマンスなど、様々なプログラムを楽しむことができます。

2. 仁川ペンタポート・ロック・フェスティバル
毎年7月から8月にかけて仁川広域市で開催される、仁川広域市が推進するロックフェスティバルです。韓国を代表する野外音楽フェスティバルとして、韓国国内はもとより、海外の有名ミュージシャンも参加するグローバルな音楽フェスティバルです。また、冷たい食べ物や様々な料理など、五感を満足させることができるフェスティバルです。

3. バムトッケビ・ナイトマーケット
ソウル市庁が主催する夜市です。ソウルの美しい夜景を見ながら屋台料理を食べることができるので、トッポッキ、ビビンバ、チヂミなどの韓国料理はもちろん、ステーキやたこ焼きなど様々な料理が味わえます。

Shikoku

In June of 2021, Nova asked me to go to Takamatsu for three months to teach. I've lived in Kansai for all of my five years in Japan and I'd never been to Shikoku before that so I jumped at the chance to explore a new part of Japan. Due to Covid restrictions, newly hired teachers were not allowed to enter Japan so my three months ended up turning into ten months. And I have to say, I truly had a wonderful time! 

First of all, Nova staff and students in Takamatsu were great and just a joy to work with.  And on top of that, I had the opportunity to explore some really beautiful areas. I visited all four prefectures on Shikoku while I was there. Some of the highlights were Ritsurin Garden, Naoshima, Shodoshima, Chichibugahama Beach, Konpira-san, Matsuyama Castle, Kochi Castle, and Shikoku Karst. I collect goshuin so having a chance to visit several of the eighty-eight temples of Shikoku was amazing. I've lived most of my life in huge cities, Osaka here in Japan and Los Angeles in the United States, so it was nice to spend a considerable amount of time in a more rural area. Takamatsu is a pretty good-sized city but you don't have to travel too far to be in the countryside. All in all, it was a lovely experience and I hope I get the chance to spend some more time there in the future.

2021年6月、NOVAから3ヶ月間、高松に教えに行かないかと誘われました。私は5年間の日本滞在中、ずっと関西に住んでいて、四国には行ったことがなかったので、日本の新しい地域を探検するチャンスだと飛びつきました。コロナ流行による行動制限により、新しく採用された教師は日本に入国することができなかったので、四国での滞在期間は3ヶ月が10ヶ月になってしまいました。そして、私は本当に素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができました。 

まず、高松のNOVAスタッフと生徒たちは素晴らしく、一緒に働くのが楽しくて仕方がありませんでした。 その上、本当に美しい地域を探索する機会にも恵まれました。四国4県をすべて訪れました。特に、栗林公園、直島、小豆島、秩父ヶ浜、金比羅さん、松山城、高知城、四国カルストなどです。私は御朱印を集めているので、四国八十八ヶ所のお寺に行く機会があったことは、とても素晴らしいことでした。私は大阪やアメリカのロサンゼルスなど大都市で生活してきましたが、地方で長い時間を過ごすのもいいものです。高松はかなり大きな都市ですが、それほど遠くまで行かなくても田舎にいるような気分になれます。全体として素敵な経験でしたので、将来、もう少し時間を過ごす機会があればと思います。
