Hugh：　Cherry Blossom Viewing - 2017

As you all know, cherry blossom viewing is extremely popular and this is also something that I enjoy. It just gives me a feeling that spring is coming and it's by far one of the best times to be in Japan.

This year, I was fortunate enough to go to three different places to experience the wonder of the blossoms.

Kyoto: Tetsu gaku no michi, aka the Philosopher's Walk. This is one of the wonders of Kansai, maybe even Japan and is a great viewing spot. One can walk along the
dis-used tracks and see a flourish of cherry blossoms. I was lucky enough to be there when there was a light gust of wind and it was snowing pink cherry blossom petals. From there, I proceeded to the canal and walked the whole way surrounded by cherry blossoms. It was such a nice vibe and there was even a girl playing the recorder, which added to the atmosphere.

Nara: Yoshino Yama, aka Mount Yoshino. It's common knowledge that this is one of best places in Japan to view cherry blossoms and it didn't disappoint. It was out of this world and although it was a bit of a hike to the middle (and then top), when I got there, the view was amazing. As far as the eye could see, there was white and pink. There were a number of restaurants and food stalls midway up the mountain (including Mos Burger) but I opted for bamboo tempura with pink sakura salt. Visiting Mount Yoshino is a must.

Osaka: Sakuranomiya. This is a place which is often left out of the discussions of good viewing spots. Actually, it's great and you can see miles upon miles of cherry trees. From the bridge (sorry, I'm unsure of the name), it was possible to take photos of cherry blossoms with the river and Osaka Castle in the background. Additionally in this area, lots of viewing parties were in full swing with people eating, drinking and having fun. I felt like a bit of a munch and went to my favorite food stall to have gyoza. In the words of the prophet The Terminator, “I'll Be Back.”

Kate： April

“April showers bring May flowers” is an English saying that means that if it rains in April it will bring many beautiful flowers in May. This saying has definitely been true this year in Osaka. It's rained for almost a week straight so far! To many, April is considered the beginning of spring, when flowers start to bloom, the days get longer again, and the temperature starts to rise, but in Boston it can be different.

Every year people wait to see what will happen in April. We will either get a slow start to spring or one last blast of winter. When I was in elementary school, we had a snowstorm big enough to cancel school for a week. This year it seems the weather can’t decide what it wants to do. There was a snowstorm at the end of March and now the temperature is sliding between summer and winter daily. I’m so glad that Osaka’s weather is warmer and more stable than Boston. Now, if only summer wasn’t so humid…

Patrizia： Abenteuer Tokyo Part 2

Ich sehe noch immer die Aussicht vom Skytree vor mir, wenn ich die Augen schließe. Die Strahlen der Abendsonne tauchten die Stadt in ein magisches Licht. Die Ausmaße von Tokyo waren einfach unfassbar. Und dann wandelte sich das Bild. Allmählich vermehrten sich die Straßenlichter in den dunkler werdenden Straßen. Worte können dem nicht gerecht werden.
I can still see the view from the Skytree in front of me when I close my eyes. The rays of evening sunlight bathed the city in a magical light. The size of Tokyo was just unbelievable. And then everything changed. Slowly the street lights came on as the dark descended on the streets. Words can't do it justice.

Harajuku, so klein es auch sein mag, hat ebenfalls einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen. Die kleinen Geschäfte, die niedlichen und vor allem unglaublich leckeren Schokoladentörtchen. Die Crepes und all die bunten Farben!
Harajuku, as small as it might be, also left a lasting impression on me: the small shops, the cute and unbelievably tasty chocolate cakes, the crepes and all the bright colours.

Der Meiji-Schrein war auch sehr schön. Es fühlte sich so an, als hätte ich die Stadt verlassen. Es war eine angenehme Pause von dem hektischem Stadtleben. Überhaupt gab es so viele Eindrücke, die auf mich einstürmten, dass es ein wenig überwältigend war.
The Meiji-shrine was very nice as well. It felt as if I had left the city. It was a pleasant break from the hectic city life. Anyway, there were so many impressions that it was all a bit overwhelming.

Tokyo fühlte sich wie ein kleines Abenteuer an. Besonders als ich mit den Zügen und U-Bahnen gefahren bin. Zum Glück hatte ich eine Karte des Schienennetzes bei mir. Ansonsten wäre ich heillos verloren gewesen.
Tokyo felt like a little adventure, especially when I traveled by train or subway. Fortunately, I had a map of the railway system. I would have been completely lost otherwise.

Zurück in Osaka verliebte ich mich sofort in die viel leereren Züge. Aber ich nahm mir auch vor noch einmal nach Tokyo zu gehen. Das nächste Mal mit jemand andern, so dass wir die Eindrücke miteinander teilen können.
Back in Osaka, I fell in love with the emptier trains. But I've decided to go to Tokyo again. Next time I will go with someone else so we can share our impressions with each other.

Ach ja und um die frühere Frage zu beantworten, ob Tokyo wirklich so ist, wie sie alle sagten: Tokyo ist Tokyo. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Zumindest für mich. Es ist eine große… nein, eine verdammt große Stadt! In Tokyo zu leben und Tokyo zu besuchen sind ohnehin zwei Paar Schuhe. Ich habe die Stadt nur für drei Tage gesehen. Die Stadt ist überwältigend. Vielleicht ein wenig zu überwältigend für mich. Da bleibe ich doch lieber in Osaka wohnen. Aber ich komme zurück und dann…. Ja, dann brauche ich wieder meinen Schienennetzplan. Wer weiß, wo ich sonst lande?!
Oh, and to answer the earlier question, whether Tokyo is really as everyone described it: Tokyo is Tokyo, no more and no less, at least for me. It is a big… no, an enormous city! To live in Tokyo and to visit Tokyo are two different things. I've seen it for only three days. It is overwhelming, maybe for me, a bit too overwhelming. So I'd rather stay in Osaka. But I will go back and then… Well, then I will need my plan of the railway system again. Who knows where I will end up otherwise?

Patrizia： Abenteuer Tokyo Part 1

Mit Grausen erinnere ich mich an meine letzte Zugfahrt in Tokyo. Fremde Körper zu nah für meinen Geschmack. Koffer und anderes Gepäck im Weg stehend. Der Horror als ich feststellte, dass noch mehr Menschen in den Zug kamen und die Erkenntnis, dass die meisten von ihnen bis zum Flughafen im Zug bleiben würden.
I remember my last train trip in Tokyo with horror, with bodies of strangers too close for my taste and luggage in the middle of the way. And I remember the horror when I realised that more people would get on the train and that most of them wouldn't get off at the airport.

Ich hörte davon. Ich sah es im Fernsehen. Und ich wusste, dass dies nicht einmal der schlimmste Berufsverkehr war. Und dennoch… Das war wahrlich ein Schock für mich! Vielleicht der Erste seit ich nach Japan gekommen bin.
I'd heard about the Tokyo rush hour and I'd seen it on TV. And I knew that this wasn't even the busiest rush hour. But it was still a real shock. Maybe the first since I came to Japan.

Erschöpft erreichte ich den Flughafen und ich fragte mich, warum ich mir das angetan hatte. Ich war vorgewarnt worden. Und dennoch bin ich nach Tokyo gereist. Also, warum?
I reached the airport exhausted and I wondered why I had done this. I'd been warned. And yet I still went to Tokyo. So why?

Neugierde! Es war die Neugierde! Und all die Geschichten, die ich gelesen und gehört habe. Tokyo, das Mekka der Unterhaltung. Tokyo, wo man alles machen kann. Tokyo, wo die Träume wahr werden. … Okay, das ist vielleicht ein wenig übertrieben, aber genauso fühlte es sich immer an, wenn über Tokyo gesprochen wurde. Also wollte ich es auch einmal erleben. Ich wollte das Tokyo sehen, von dem alle immer sprachen. War etwas an dem dran, was alle sagten?

Curiosity! It was curiosity! And all the stories I've read and heard. Tokyo, the Mecca of entertainment. Tokyo, where you can do anything. Tokyo, where all your dreams come true. Well okay, this is an exaggeration, but that is the feeling I get when I hear people talk about Tokyo. So I wanted to experience it once in my life. I wanted to see the Tokyo everyone is always talking about. Was it true what they said?
Aber war es das wirklich wert gewesen? Einen Eistee später und in einem recht bequemen Sessel wartend, konnte ich die Frage endlich beantworten: Ja, es war es wert gewesen.

Had it really been worth it? Later on, while I was waiting for an iced tea and sitting in a rather comfortable chair, I could finally answer the question: Yes it had been worth it.
