Alan Wiren: Naoshima

There is a tiny island in the Seto Inland Sea that is internationally famous, but little known among the Japanese. It is called Naoshima. I visited there a few years ago and I hope I will have the chance to return. About two thirds of the island is a copper refinery, but the remainder has a remarkable history that has brought about a surreal present.

Naoshima is home to an international camp, where children from all over the world come and learn together in a unique and beautiful environment. The island also houses two modern art museums. Both of which were designed by Andoh Tadao. 

Benesse House is a combination of museum and hotel, meaning if you stay there, you can stroll around the museum after hours if you like. The aptly named Underground Museum is almost entirely underground, but is entirely lit by natural light. Unlike most museums, the exhibition spaces were designed specifically for the artworks they display. The first, for example, is a large open space with a giant, granite ball at its center. The stone is polished to mirror smoothness and reflects the wooden posts, inlaid with gold, which are placed at regular intervals around the perimeter. The light enters through a horizontal slit in the ceiling parallel to the course of the sun across the sky. No two moments ever are the same in that room.

For years Benesse House displayed modern art in the traditional manner until one special exhibition was designed to utilize both the inside and the outside of the building. That set the tone for the future. Now Naoshima is home to an ever-increasing number of site-specific artworks: creations that both incorporate and are part of the surrounding landscape. Picture yourself in a jacuzzi at night, listening to the surf on the beach nearby, watching the stars above, and surrounded by stones carefully placed to focus the internal energies of the earth at your location. This is the Cultural Melting Bath.

Abandoned houses in the island village and a temple on a peak have been transformed into artworks where the nature of human perception is often an integral part of the design. Two more nearby islands now provide permanent venues for creative works in the same spirit, and during several annual events the art spills out onto other surrounding islands. I hope it will not be too much longer before I once more board the ferry on my way to become part of the art.

With the growth of business technology have also come advances in personal technology. What was once only available to military personnel and large corporations is becoming more readily available to everyday people. For example, smartphones now include encryption software. What do you think about the rise in personal technology? Are there things that a regular person shouldn't have or shouldn’t need to access? What are your hopes for the future of technology and are there any advances that you have already heard about that excite you?

Mergers & Acquisitions 
Companies around the world completed about $5 trillion worth of mergers and acquisitions during 2015, the higest amount since 2007. Experts expect this trend to continue in 2016. Recently, the merger between Sharp and Hon Hai Precision Industry (widely known as Foxconn) was finalized to the tune of 349 billion yen. What consequences, good and bad, can result from such deals? For struggling businesses, what other alternatives do they have? Are there companies that should be protected from being acquired?

Lille est une des principales villes du Nord de la France, elle est également la plus grande de la région. Au niveau national, il s'agit de la 4ème plus grande ville de France. Sa population est d'environ 1.200.000 habitants. Elle est située à seulement une dizaine de kilomètres de la Belgique.

Lille is one of the main cities in northern France and the largest city in the region. It is the fourth largest urban area in France and the population is about 1,200,000. It is only about ten kilometers from Belgium.

Son nom en ancien français "L'Isle" (que l'on écrirait "L'île" de nos jours) proviendrait de sa localisation primitive sur une île des marécages de la vallée de la Deûle (rivière traversant la ville) où elle a été fondée.

The city's name comes from the old French word for island (L'Isle) and was probably chosen because of its location on an island in a marsh of the River Deûle, where it was founded.
         
Lille a connu une histoire mouvementée du Moyen-Âge à la Révolution française. Durant cette période elle a été hollandaise, belge, allemande et même espagnole avant de redevenir française. C'est d'ailleurs pour cette raison que l'on peut y trouver une architecture d'inspiration hollandaise ainsi que la Citadelle qui permettait de défendre la ville.

Lille had a turbulent history from the Medieval Ages to the French Revolution. During that period it was Dutch, Belgian, German and even Spanish before becoming French again. That is why you can find Dutch-inspired architecture as well as the citadel, which was built to protect the city.

Lille ayant été classée "Ville d'art et d'histoire" en 2004, vous y trouverez de nombreux endroits intéressants à visiter : la Vieille Bourse, l'un des monuments les plus prestigieux de la ville, des églises de styles variés comme l'église Sainte-Catherine (gothique), l'église Saint-Étienne (classique), la cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille (néo-gothique) ou encore le Palais des Beaux-Arts, considéré comme le plus grand musée de province.

In 2004, Lille was chosen as the European City of Art and History so you can find a lot of interesting places to visit such as the Vieille Bourse, one of the most prestigious monuments of the town, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Lille Palace of Fine Arts), which is one of the largest art museums in France. There are also various styles of churches like the church of Sainte-Catherine (Gothic), the church of Saint-Étienne (classical) and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral (neo-Gothic).

Vous déplacer dans Lille sera facile grâce aux métros, aux bus, aux tramways et aux trains qui déservent la ville. Depuis peu, un nouveau système de location de vélo à même été mis en place. Ce dernier vous permet d'emprunter un vélo dans un quartier et de le rendre dans un autre.

Getting around in Lille is easy thanks to the subway, buses, streetcars and trains serving the city. Recently, a new kind of bicycle rental system has been set up. It allows you to borrow a bicycle in one neighourhood and return it in another.

Vous pourrez également goûter aux spécialités locales : la fricadelle (saucisse composée de viande hachée et d'épices), la carbonnade flamande (morceaux de viande de bœuf cuits avec de la bière, des oignons et du pain d'épices), la flamiche au maroilles (sorte de quiche au fromage),  le welsh (tranche de pain de mie grillée et couverte d'une tranche de jambon sur laquelle on verse un mélange de cheddar fondant, de moutarde et de bière) et enfin les moules-frites qui sont le plat emblématique de la Braderie de Lille.
 
You can also try these local specialities: fricadelle (sausage made of minced meat and spices); carbonnade flamande (meat pieces cooked with beer, onions and gingerbread); flamiche au maroilles (a kind of cheese quiche); welsh (a mixture of melted cheddar, mustard and beer on a slice of toast); and finally, moules-frites (mussels and French fries), which is the emblematic dish of the Lille Braderie (Lille Fair).

Si vous vous rendez à Lille le premier week-end de septembre vous pourrez alors participer à la Braderie de Lille, dont les origines remontent au XIIème siècle et qui est l'un des plus grand marché aux puces d'Europe. Entre 2 et 3 millions de visiteurs s'y rendent chaque année. Elle se déroule du samedi matin au dimanche soir non-stop. De nombreuses animations (semi-marathon, concerts, manèges, etc…) accompagnent l'évènement.

If you visit Lille on the first weekend of September, you can go to the Lille Braderie (Lille Fair), which dates back to the 12th century and is the largest street market in Europe. Between two and three million visitors attend every year. It starts on Saturday morning and lasts until Sunday night with no break. There are many events on those days such as a half marathon, concerts, and rides.

Jessica: Ich liebe Musik!

Wie viele von Ihnen wissen, liebe ich Musik. Am liebsten höre ich Rammstein, verschiedene japanische Rock Bands und Folk Metal Bands aus aller Welt. Alleine in meinem japanischen Apartment habe ich über 300 CDs, 10 Video Kassetten, und ein paar Demotapes.

As some of you already know, I am a big fan of music. Mostly I like listening to Rammstein (a German rock band), various Japanese rock bands and folk metal bands from all over the world. In my apartment in Japan, I have more than three hundred CDs, ten videos and a couple of demo tapes.

Jedoch höre ich nicht nur Musik, ich spiele auch ein bisschen Bass.
Ich habe einen 5 Saiten Jazz-Bass von Cort. Wenn ich Zeit habe, übe ich einfache Lieder wie „In the Hall of the Mountain King“ von „Edward Grieg“, bis meine Nachbarn gegen die Wand klopfen und mich bitten aufzuhören.

However, I don't only listen to music, I also play bass guitar. I have a 5-string Jazz bass from Colt. When I have spare time, I play easy songs such as In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edward Grieg - until my neighbours knock on my wall and ask me to stop!

Karaoke singe ich auch gerne. Ich denke, Karaoke ist eine gute Art Japanisch zu lernen. An meinen freien Tagen gehe ich oft zu der Karaoke-Box neben meiner Wohnung. 4 Stunden inklusive freien nichtalkoholischen Getränken kosten weniger als 1000 Yen.

I also like singing karaoke. I think it is a good way to practise Japanese. On my days off I often go to the karaoke box close to my apartment, where four hours with soft drinks cost less than one thousand yen.

Am liebsten singe ich japanische Lieder von Buck-Tick, englische Lieder von Nighwish oder deutsche Lieder von Marlene Dietrich.

I love singing the Japanese songs of Buck-Tick, the English songs of Nightwish and the German songs of Marlene Dietrich.

Manchmal singe ich lautere Lieder, wie die von D, aber damit habe ich einmal eine Gruppe von Mittelschülerinnen erschreckt, die neben mir gesungen haben. Daher schalte ich jetzt das Mikrofon aus, wenn ich growle.
 
Sometimes I try to sing louder songs such as the songs of D, but ever since I scared a group of middle school girls who were singing next to me, I mute the microphone when I growl.

Chiara: Ciao a tutti!

Ciao a tutti! Mi chiamo Chiara, sono insegnante di italiano a NOVA. Vivo in Giappone da un anno e mezzo circa. Ho deciso di venire in Giappone perché amo la cultura tradizionale giapponese.

Hello everybody! My name is Chiara. I am an Italian teacher here at NOVA. I have been living in Japan for about one and a half years. I decided to come to Japan because I love traditional Japanese culture.

Quando ero alle scuole superiori ho letto un libro sulla vita delle geisha e ho iniziato ad interessarmi alla cultura giapponese leggendo diversi libri. Ho studiato giapponese all'Università di Milano e mi sono laureta in lingua giapponese e inglese. Dopo la laurea sono venuta in Giappone per studiare e lavorare.

When I was in high school, I read a book about the life of a geisha and became interested in Japanese culture, and I started reading books about Japan. I studied Japanese at the University of Milan and I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Japanese and English languages. After graduating from university, I came to Japan to study and work.

Mi piace leggere libri di autori giapponesi come Murakami Haruki e Mishima Yukio e mi piace guardare alla televisione il teatro Kabuki e i film sulla storia giapponese. In giappone mi piace visitare i templi e passeggiare per le strade vecchie ti Kyoto, mi piace la natura, la campagna e viaggiare.



I like reading books by Japanese authors such as Murakami Haruki and Mishima Yukio and I like watching Kabuki theater and films about Japanese history on television. In Japan I enjoy visiting temples and wandering around the old streets of Kyoto. I love nature, the countryside and travelling.

In Giappone ho visitato le principali città e Okinawa. Sono stata anche in Spagna, Francia, Inghilterra, Svezia e Egitto. Mi piace vivere in Giappone e la cucina giapponese, amo il sushi e i dolci giapponesi, ma quando torno in Italia mangio pizza e pasta. Nel mio tempo libero mi piace incontrare gli amici, ho moti amici che vengono da tutto il mondo.

I have visited the major cities of Japan and Okinawa. I have also been to Spain, France, England, Sweden and Egypt. I enjoy living in Japan and Japanese food. I love sushi and Japanese sweets, but when I go back to Italy, I eat pizza and pasta. In my free time I like meeting friends. I have friends from all over the world.
