A gift that made me happy when I was a child

By Teacher Ayna

A gift is something that is given wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. It symbolizes some of the special occasions, like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and some holidays. And it holds some precious memories in my life.

When I was a child, I received one of the best gifts that a child could ever ask for. As a little girl, I used to dream of having a cute stuffed animal that I could hug in my sleep, but one day, my father brought home a pair of fun-sized birds in a cage. They were so full of life and cheery. They had vibrant colors that fed my eyes with their beauty. They were so charming that I spent my time gazing at them all day. It was indeed one of the happiest moments in my childhood.

As I grew older, I realized a gift is not only material things; it is always more than that. It's not the size of the gift or how extravagant it looks. The ones that come from the most sincere hearts are still the best gifts of all.

Simbang Gabi  which means “Evening or Night Mass”

By Teacher Joey

It’s a Filipino Christmas tradition. As a devotional practice in the tradition of the novena, it is a series of nine evening Masses usually celebrated during Advent from December 16th - 24th, in preparation for Christmas Day.
The majority of parishes celebrate their first Simbang Gabi Mass between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. Rural areas sometimes go later, around 5:30 AM.  For those unable to rise in those early morning hours, you’re in luck!
Why are there nine Simbang Gabi Masses?
You see, according to scripture, the Virgin Mother miraculously became pregnant by the Holy Spirit in March before giving birth nine months later in December. Thus the nine Simbang Gabi gatherings represent each month of Mary carrying baby Jesus in anticipation of his holy birth.
Some people say that you have to complete the nine masses. However, in my opinion, you do not have to attend all nine Simbang Gabi masses in a row to gain blessings or satisfy the tradition. The most important thing is setting the intention to take part in Simbang Gabi.
Join The Simbang Gabi Mass Today!
Look, I get it! 4:00 AM alarms before hustling through thick holiday traffic sounds like chaos you’d rather just watch on Facebook, right? But folks, trust me: no amount of glitzy gift displays in the mall can ever replace those lifelong magical shared moments carved out while bleary-eyed under the glowing dawn of Simbang Gabi!

A New Year  Celebration

By Teacher  Dea

FILIPINOS celebrate New Year's with lively family get-togethers, featuring a big feast known as Noche Buena. The table is piled high with favorite dishes like lechon (roast pig), pancit (noodles for a long life), and sweet rice cakes, all meant to bring good health and wealth in the new year. It’s a special time when families come together to enjoy a delicious meal.

As midnight draws near, the streets fill up with fireworks, firecrackers, and lots of noise. People think all this racket scares away bad luck and evil spirits, giving everyone a clean slate for the new year.

Many folks also dress in polka-dotted clothes, which they believe bring money, and place twelve round fruits on the table—one for each month of the year—to wish for a prosperous year ahead. In some areas, kids jump at midnight because they think it will help them grow taller. The night is full of cheers, toasts, and a hopeful spirit as families look forward to a fresh start

My Favorite Place in Japan

By Teacher Bob

Students sometimes ask me what my favorite place in Japan is. That’s a  difficult question to answer because there are so many great places. But if I had so say just one place, it would be Arashiyama in Kyoto. If you’re there on a sunny day, it’s a glorious spot. The Togetsukyo Bridge is impressive and it’s great to stroll by the river and watch the boats go by. Whenever I go, I visit Tenryu-ji with its wonderful garden. It’s beautiful in spring when the cherry blossom is in full bloom and in autumn when the trees’ leaves are changing color.

Of course, Arashiyama is popular with tourists and it can get very crowded. I haven’t been there for a few years so I’m not sure how crowded it gets these days, but I found that if you are prepared to walk a bit, it’s possible to escape the crowds. Besides Tenryu-ji, there are numerous other temples and gardens to explore.
