Anime

Anime is one of my favorite escapisms from the boring aspects of life. I love how science is presented in Dokuta Suton; how data and statistics are brought into play in No Gemu No Raifu; how logic and reasoning are exhibited in Desu Noto, and how the reality of war is displayed in Shingeki no Kyojin.
For me, anime is not just pure entertainment; it is also inspirational. In fact, when faced with a challenge, I’ve learned to stand up and say Senku Ishigami’s catchphrase, Sosoru ze, kore wa.

アニメは、退屈な日常から逃避するための、私の好きなものの１つです。『Dr. STONE (ドクターストーン)』では科学が、『ノーゲーム・ノーライフ』ではデータや統計が、『DEARH NOTE (デスノート)』では論理や推理が、『進撃の巨人』では戦争の現実が描かれています。
私にとって、アニメは単なる娯楽ではなく、感動を与えてくれるものです。実際、私は困難に直面したとき、石神千空 (いしがみ せんくう ：Dr. STONEの主人公) のキャッチフレーズである「唆るぜ、これは!」を口にするようになったのです。

My First Day in Japan

Hello everyone! My name is Hendrik, from South Africa. Some of you may know me from my online classes during the past few months, or from the Senrichuo branch in Osaka. I want to tell you about my first day in Japan. 

My flight took me from Johannesburg to Singapore, and from Singapore to Japan. I expected to be met by many new and challenging things on my arrival, and I was prepared for most of them. One thing I was not prepared for was the heat. The weather blew its fiery breath in my face from the moment I disembarked. I found brief solace on the white seat of a cheery taxi driver's cab bound for the guest house – my first experience of Osaka's famous friendliness.

I arrived at my guest house at about 21:30, exhausted from the flight and soaking wet from the heat. I immediately went to take a shower, only to find that I had no idea how to open the taps – they looked nothing like anything I've ever seen before.

After my shower, I slept until my alarm woke me up to a sunny Osaka. Next, the daunting prospect of finding my way on the trains and subway, with two suitcases (25kg and 15kg respectively and both with broken wheels), no cash in my pocket, and no Japanese skills whatsoever. A Jay-Z loving rapper by the name of Sota helped me. He set me on my way and gave me my second taste of friendly Osaka. Many mistakes and lots of walks later, I met with my manager and we proceeded to walk to my apartment. It must have been quite a sight to see two sweaty foreigners carrying two heavy suitcases uphill in 37 degrees Celsius with 70% humidity.

Upon entering my apartment I saw the most beautiful thing in the world. In that moment, nothing could have been a sweeter sight: an air-conditioner. The hard part was over and I settled in for the night. I had survived my first day. I had a strange feeling, almost as if I was home. Fantastic! Thank you, Japan.

みなさん、こんにちは。南アフリカから来たヘンドリックです。ここ数ヶ月のオンラインクラスや、大阪の千里中央校で私を知っている人もいるかもしれませんね。今回は、私の日本での初日についてお話したいと思います。

ヨハネスブルグからシンガポールへ、そしてシンガポールから日本へのフライトでした。来日前、私は多くの新しいことや困難なことに遭遇することを予想しており、そのほとんどに備えることができました。しかし、1つだけ想定外だったのは、暑さでした。飛行機を降りた瞬間から、炎のような熱風が私の顔に向かってきました。ゲストハウスに向かうタクシーの白い座席で、私は束の間の安らぎを得ました。元気なタクシー運転手のおかげで、大阪の有名な親しみやすさを初めて体験しました。

飛行機で疲れ果て、暑さで汗だくになりながら、21時30分頃にゲストハウスに到着しました。すぐにシャワーを浴びようとしましたが、水道の蛇口の開け方がわかりませんでした。

シャワーを浴びた後、目覚ましに起こされるまで熟睡し、目が覚めると大阪は快晴でした。次に、2つのスーツケース（それぞれ25kgと15kgで車輪が壊れている）を持ち、ポケットには現金もなく、日本語も全く話せない状態で、電車と地下鉄使って目的地に向かうという困難な状況が待っていました。そんな私を助けてくれたのは、Jay-Zを愛するラッパー、Sotaでした。彼は私を道案内してくれ、2度目のフレンドリーな大阪を体験することができました。何度も失敗し、たくさん歩いた後、私はマネージャーと会い、アパートまで歩きました。気温37度、湿度70％の中、汗だくの外国人2人が重いスーツケースを2つ持って坂道を登る姿は、さぞかし面白かったことでしょう。

アパートに入った瞬間、私は世界で一番美しいものを見ました。その瞬間は、これ以上ないほど美しい光景、それがエアコンでした。大変なことは終わったので、夜はゆっくりすることにしました。私はこうして初日を乗り切りました。まるで家に帰ってきたかのような、不思議な感覚に襲われました。ファンタスティック！ありがとう、日本。

The Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

You may have heard about Thanksgiving, the day of giving thanks for the blessings and harvest of the year. It's a national holiday not only in the United States and Canada, but also Grenada, Saint Lucia and Liberia. A typical American Thanksgiving features sports or a parade on TV, maybe a church visit and the highlight - a family meal of roast turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumkpin pie.

In the US, Thanksgiving is celebrated on a Thursday and the day after has recently come to be known as Black Friday. Black Friday is the start of the Christmas shopping season and a day of huge sales. Pre-COVID 19, it was quite common to see news reports of huge crowds swarming into stores eager to snag the best deals.

Since the rise of the Internet, the first Monday after Thanksgiving has also become a day of sales - Cyber Monday. This day gives online retailers the chance to also take part in the holiday season spending frenzy by offering massive discounts.

The starting point of the American holiday season, Thanksgiving has evolved from its origins to become an extended weekend of special events. Which parts of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend have you experienced? Which parts are you most interested? Does Japan have any similar holidays?

１年の恵みや収穫に感謝する日、サンクスギビングをご存知でしょうか。アメリカやカナダだけでなく、グレナダ、セントルシア、リベリア共和国でも国民の祝日となっています。典型的なアメリカのサンクスギビングでは、スポーツやパレードがテレビで放映され、教会を訪れることもあり、目玉であるローストターキースタッフィング、マッシュポテト、クランベリーソース、パンプキンパイを家族で食べます。

アメリカでサンクスギビングは木曜日に行われ、その翌日がブラックフライデーと呼ばれるようになりました。ブラックフライデーとは、クリスマス商戦の始まりであり、大規模なセールが行われる日のことです。コロナが流行する以前は、お買い得品を手に入れようと大勢の人が店に押し寄せる様子がよく報道されていました。

インターネットが普及してからは、サンクスギビングの後の最初の月曜日もセールの日、サイバーマンデーになりました。この日は、オンラインショップがホリデーシーズンの商戦に参加するチャンスとなり、大幅な値引きを行います。

アメリカのホリデーシーズンの出発点であるサンクスギビングは、そういった理由から発展し、特別なイベントが行われる長期的な週末となりました。あなたはサンクスギビングのどの部分を体験しましたか？また、どの部分に一番興味がありますか？日本には似たような祝日がありますか？

Malaysia

In August 2022 I took a vacation to Malaysia. Specifically, I went to an area called Penang. Penang is one of the states of Malaysia and is most well known for Penang Island. I went there because my partner is from Malaysia, and she and I went there to visit her family and friends. Due to the coronavirus pandemic she hadn't seen them in over two years!
 
My experience in Penang was somewhat different to most tourists that visit as I was with local people going to more local places, although we did go to some tourist areas because it was my first time visiting Malaysia.
 
Malaysia is a very interesting place for many reasons, it is a mega diverse country, not only because of the nature, but also the people that call themselves Malaysian. Malaysian people are actually at least three different sub groups with different cultures. There are the Indian Malaysians, the Malay Malaysians and the Chinese Malaysians. I spent my time with the Chinese Malaysians.
 
One thing Malaysians pride themselves on is their food. The three different sub groups mean there are a lot of different types of delicious foods. Of course, I had a lot of traditional Malay dishes and Chinese dishes too. Malaysian people like to eat a lot! I quite enjoyed the morning markets as the breakfasts are great (my favourite had to be wan tan mee = won ton noodles). I also enjoyed dim sum breakfast.
 
Some of the places I visited included the beach (of course) and a few Chinese temples. One of these temples was called Snake Temple and the snakes were free to roam around – scary! One of the most famous sightseeing spots is the biggest mountain on Penang Island called Penang Hill. The views were wonderful and there were some things to see there like botanical gardens.

私はマレーシアに行くのが初めてだったので、観光地にも行きましたが、地元の人たちと一緒に地元の場所に行ったので、他の観光客とは少し違った体験ができました。
 
マレーシアは、自然だけでなく、マレーシア人と呼ばれる人々も含め、非常に多様性に富んだ国であり、多くの理由で非常に興味深い場所です。マレーシアの人々は、異なる文化を持つ少なくとも3つのサブグループに分かれています。インド系マレーシア人、マレー系マレーシア人、そして中国系マレーシア人です。私は中国系マレーシア人と一緒に過ごしました。
 
マレーシア人が誇りにしていることのひとつに、食事があります。3つの異なるサブグループがあるため、さまざまな種類のおいしい食べ物があります。もちろん、伝統的なマレー料理もたくさん食べましたし、中国料理も食べました。マレーシアの人たちは食べることが大好きなんです！朝市の朝食はとても美味しくて、楽しかったです（私のお気に入りはワンタンメン）。また、飲茶と呼ばれる朝食も美味しかったです。
 
私が訪れた場所は、ビーチと中国寺院がいくつかあります。そのうちのひとつは蛇廟（蛇寺）と呼ばれるもので、蛇が自由に動き回っていて、怖かったです。最も有名な観光スポットの一つは、ペナンヒルと呼ばれるペナン島で一番大きな山です。景色がすばらしく、植物園のような見どころもありました。
