How to Enjoy Sinulog
By Teacher Riza

Sinulog is one of the biggest and most exciting festivals in Cebu. It is celebrated every January in honor of Señor Santo Niño, the Holy Child Jesus.

To truly enjoy Sinulog, it is important to prepare ahead of time. The streets become very crowded, so wearing comfortable clothes and shoes is a must. Light clothing is recommended because the weather is usually hot. Bringing water, snacks, and a small bag can help you stay comfortable throughout the day. It is also important to keep your belongings safe since many people gather in one place.

Another exciting part of Sinulog is watching the street dancing and grand parade. The dancers wear bright and creative costumes while performing to the rhythm of loud drums. The music fills the streets and makes everyone feel excited and happy. You can also join the crowd, dance along, and shout “Pit Señor!” to show your devotion and joy. Taking photos and videos is a great way to remember the fun and colorful moments.

Lastly, Sinulog is more enjoyable when shared with family and friends. Eating local street food, buying souvenirs, and enjoying music together create unforgettable memories. Sinulog is a celebration of faith, culture, and joy, and when celebrated with respect and happiness, it becomes a truly meaningful experience.

How did you spend the New Year?
By Teacher Ken

New Year’s Day for our family always starts early, and this year was no different.

For our New Year feast, we decided to cook a variety of dishes. One of them was Afritada, a classic Filipino stew made with tender meat cooked in a rich tomato-based sauce with potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. We also prepared Lumpia, crispy Filipino spring rolls filled with a savory mixture of meat and vegetables, which are always a favorite at celebrations. Another dish was Humba, a sweet and savory braised pork cooked with soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, and spices, giving it a deep and comforting flavor. We also served Cajun shrimp, which added a spicy and flavorful twist to our table, and of course, we prepared ham, a traditional New Year food that symbolizes abundance.

As a family, we wore shirts of the same color to symbolize unity and togetherness. As midnight approached, we prepared our fireworks, including Binggala, a traditional type of firecracker that creates loud sounds believed to drive away bad luck. We also had fountain fireworks and other fireworks, which we shared with our neighbors as we welcomed the New Year together.

Overall, spending the New Year this way—busy, noisy, and filled with food, laughter, and family—made the celebration truly meaningful and memorable. What about you? How did you spend New Year in your country?
