A past time of ritual of return in Mt. Kanlaon
By Teacher Katie

We left our house in Tisa and drove as a family to Toledo Port. From there, we boarded the boat for a twohour ride. I stood by the rail, the horizon opening ahead. I was finally coming home. I can still see that day as vividly as yesterday, made unforgettable by Mt. Kanlaon’s presence in the distance.

Mt. Kanlaon holds a significant place in both geography and memory. Rising to 2,465 meters (8,087 feet), it is the highest peak in Central Visayas. The mountain lies within the protected Mt. Kanlaon National Park, itself a sanctuary of biodiversity. The mountain is not only majestic but also volatile. It is classified as highly active. It is marked by eruptions, earthquakes, and gas emissions over the years. It feels as though the mountain carries something within it. A story perhaps.

I recall a local legend my Auntie once shared about Mt. Kanlaon. She told me the story of Princess Kang and Prince Laon, two lovers bound by devotion yet fated for tragedy. Fate tore them apart, and from their story the mountain rose. As she spoke, I gazed at the dark outline of the mountain in the distance. Looking back now, I realize my own story with family is intertwined with nature and Mt. Kanlaon itself. My story may be different from that of the legend, yet something remains the same: the habit of returning.

Mt. Kanlaon keeps the place, and I carry the memory. Each return becomes another legend to tell.
