What is Halloween?

October is here which means Halloween is coming. And while it's still somewhat of a new event in Japan, in the United States, Halloween is definitely a big part of American culture. So, let's talk about Halloween!
Sometimes students ask me about the history or origins of Halloween. Well, in short, Halloween starts the time of the year where people remember the dead. It came to the US in the 1800's and from there spread around the world.
Probably the most popular or most famous activities are trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns. In the old days, people would wear a costume to impersonate the dead and to protect themselves from evil spirits. They would also go to their neighbors' houses to ask for food. Neighbors who gave food would have good luck whereas those who did not would get back luck. Jack-o'-lanterns were also carved and displayed to keep away evil spirits.

10月に入ったということは、ハロウィンが近づいてきたということです。日本ではまだ少し新しいイベントであるハロウィンですが、アメリカのハロウィンはアメリカ文化の大きな部分を占めていることは間違いないでしょう。さて、今回はハロウィンについてお話しましょう。
時々、生徒さんからハロウィンの歴史や起源について聞かれることがあります。簡単に言うと、ハロウィンは1年のうちで死者を偲ぶ時期の始まりです。1800年代にアメリカに伝わり、そこから世界中に広まりました。
おそらく最も人気な、あるいは最も有名なアクティビティは、トリック・オア・トリート、コスチュームの着用、カボチャを彫ってジャック・オー・ランタンにすることでしょう。昔は、死者になりすまし、悪霊から身を守るためにコスチュームを身に着けていたそうです。また、近所の家に食べ物をもらいに行くこともありました。食べ物をくれた隣人には幸運が訪れ、くれなかった隣人には幸運が訪れないと言われています。また、悪霊を追い払うために、ジャック・オー・ランタンを彫って飾りました。
