Basilica Del Sto. Niño
By Teacher Pretch

The Santo Niño Church is a very old and special church in Cebu City, Philippines. It is also called the Basilica Minore Del Santo Niño. This church is the oldest Catholic Church in the Philippines. The church was built in 1565 by Spanish explorers. People believe this statue was given by Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juana, the wife of a local king, in 1521 when they were baptized as Christians. The original church was made of wood and nipa, but it was destroyed by fire.

The church we see today was built in 1739 using stones and coral blocks. It looks old but very beautiful. It is one of the most famous places to visit for both locals and tourists. Many people go there to pray, attend mass, and light candles. I also visit the church sometimes. When I go there, I feel calm and peaceful. I like to light candles and pray for my family and for people I care about. The church is quiet, and I feel close to God when I am there.

Every January, the church is the center of a big celebration called the Sinulog Festival. A lot of people attend this event. There are dances, songs, and processions to honor Santo Niño. The streets are full of happy people wearing colorful clothes. It is a mix of faith and culture, and it brings many visitors to Cebu.
The Santo Niño Church is not just a place to visit. It is a place where people feel hope and faith. It is part of the history of the Philippines. Many people visit there to pray and give thanks. It is a peaceful place where you can feel God's love.

For me, the Santo Niño Church is very special. Every time I visit, I feel happy and thankful. It helps me remember that God is always with us.

Cebu Provincial Charter Day
By Teacher Queenie

When someone hears the phrase "Cebu Charter Day," they may think of February 24th. But did you know Cebu Province has its own founding anniversary
Cebu Province Charter Day is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the province's establishment and to honour its rich heritage and cultural identity. This day is for Cebuanos to reflect on the history of when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was appointed as the governor of Cebu.

Cebu Provincial Charter Day is a special non-working holiday celebrated in the province of Cebu on August 6th. This year, we'll be celebrating its 32nd founding anniversary. The Cebu Provincial Charter Day is more than just revelry; it also serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of the province of Cebu.
Every year, Cebuanos celebrate the Cebu Provincial Charter Day with festivities. Many people from different provinces showcase their own cultural events, traditional dances, and performances.

What about the place you're living in? Do you also have a founding anniversary? I would love to

HOW TO SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS ON HOLIDAYS

By Teacher Jelle

Holidays in the Philippines are treasured moments filled with laughter, food, and heartfelt connection — seasons where friendships are celebrated like family and traditions shine with joy and unity.

One of the most anticipated holidays is New Year’s Day, bursting into life with fireworks, festive meals, and hopeful cheers. After midnight, friends often exchange warm wishes, eat leftovers from Media Noche (a grand midnight feast), and visit one another’s homes for a salubong — a joyful welcome to the year ahead.

In January, the Sinulog Festival in Cebu comes alive not just as a religious event, but as a colorful celebration of friendship and heritage. Friends join parades, dance to the rhythm of drums, wear vibrant costumes, and paint each other’s faces for fun. At the heart of the festival is Santo Niño — the Child Jesus — a symbol of faith, innocence, and divine protection.

Each celebration is more than a date — it’s a living memory shared. As Filipinos, we carry pakikisama — a deep sense of harmony and connection. And during the holidays, that spirit glows brightest. Because in our culture, presence is the most precious present.
